I don't think it's a joke; but I'm too lazy to try it myself. Where I live I am so far from neighbors that my wireless USB reciever only sees our home router; but I routinely get five bars. Cell phones operate at megahertz carrier frequencies and a few turns of that cable would definitely have enough inductance to pick up a signal. Chokes like that are used on audio cables because they are so reactive to megahertz frequencies. And the cell phone has an antenna and amplifier designed to pick up a signal from many miles away. So I'll wager that that coil method does offer substantial signal boost. The inventor is most ingenious - my hats off to him!:36_1_32v:

do not cut the safety ground wire on your computer.


an earth ground is not perfectly silent at RF frequencies. That connection to a ground stake outside or to your copper plumbing travels through many feet of twisting copper wire before it gets to your appliances or computer. That is a lot of inductance to RF energy.

The ground is for safety. not for RF silence.

Somebody needs to explain to me how an CAT5 ethernet cable that is plugged in on only one end will allow the ethernet transciever to demodulate RF

This is nonsense. That's not how a CD is made. And the polycarbonate base must be of precise purity, thickness and optical refractance. The reflective layer is sputtered on in a vacuum. CDs are pretty amazing things that cannot be made by hand with simple materials.

Completely fake; well done and hilarious but fake.

For starters, you plug the CAT5e cable into a network interface card (NIC) on the desktop.

1) This NIC does not understand how to process the data it would receive from WI-FI signals.

2) The NIC isn't even receiving any wifi signals as simply wrapping an insulated CAT5e cable around an insulated mobile phone won't do anything other than waste your cable.

3) If he were trying to create an antenna, sticking an antenna into your NIC isn't going to do anything (see 1)

He could have made it believable by simply tethering a smart phone to his desktop and using it as a modem... that would work though I don't know if it would give you better range.

Steps to truly increase range:

1) Antennas are key... get a nice 9 dBi 2.4GHz Rubber Duck Antenna with a RP-TNC connector on it and pickup either a PCI-based or USB-based WI-FI adapter and put the antenna on it.

2) Same as above, but on the wireless access point itself.

3) Put a different firmware like Tomato (mentioned above) or dd-wrt on the access point (I recommend a WRT54GL for this) and increase the transmission power to something over 100mw (I wouldn't recommend going over 150mW unless very well ventilated).

Those are really the only things one can do. There are many variations on antennas (DIY canteena, yagi, etc.) that can give you different results.

The more I think of that video, the more it makes me laugh because he mixes everything up to sound like it would work; it's like saying "to make the best milkshake: take out your blender, stick in your ice, cover the blender in milk, plug it into an apple and put the apple in a microwave set to high for one minute."
